The mission of the Quiet Products Design Technical Group is
to develop a broadly applicable methodology for the virtual acoustic design of
structures. The method integrates the disciplines of structural dynamics,
acoustics and optimization into a unified approach that allows designers to
include sound as a parameter in the early stages of product development
To optimally design a structure, a set of acoustic
characteristics are first specified, e.g., sound spectrum or radiated power.
Design variables are then chosen that might include the addition of masses or
multiple-tuned resonators to the structure as well as distributions of
stiffeners or damping. A custom-coded acoustic program POWER is used to
assess the radiated sound power as a function of the model's design
variables. Data processing and optimization
algorithms are used within MATLAB to determine which design variables give
the best fit to the acoustic specifications.
